On June 9, 2009, I was invited to make a presentation about funeral services of the Shia Ismaili Muslim tradition to the health care professionals at the Alberta Children's Hospital in Calgary.
The objective of the session was to provide the staff of the hospital an insight of funeral and bereavement practices of the various faith and cultural communities.
The session was held as part of the recommendation of the "When a Child Dies: Cultural Competency in Paediatric Palliative Care" research project carried out by the hospital.
At the end of my presentation, I recited the Salwaat - a prayer that is recited throughout an Ismaili Muslim funeral:
Allahumma Salli Ala Muhammadin Wa ale Muhammad
O Allah, shower your blessings upon Muhammad and his descendants
Swami Ramananda Maharaj (Hindu) and Venerable Hong Keo (Buddhist) rounded out the faith-based community presentations.
We also had a presentation on the Chinese customs and traditions.
Two parents, who had recently lost a child, shared with us how they dealt with their tragic loss. May God give them strength and courage to deal with this tragedy.
There were about 100 care providers as well as Sparkle and Jumpa, the hospital clowns:
